What are Sessions in Google Analytics and why are they important to measure?

Sessions are defined by Google as "a group of user interactions with your website that take place within a given time frame".

Simply put, 10 users visiting your site at 5 separate times each would equal a total of 50 sessions. You might think measuring users is more important, but there's actually a lot you can learn by tracking sessions.

For instance, take a look at how many sessions your new users are creating vs. your returning users. Is one drastically higher than the other? And what's the bounce rate of each of these groups' sessions? 

If you're seeing a lower number of sessions and a higher bounce rate for new users, maybe your site is more targeted to current customers than prospects? 

Keep in mind, analytics don't mean much unless you have something to compare them to. So be sure to keep track of the metrics month over month to identify dips, surges, changes, and trends. That's when the data starts working for you and provides direction to help optimize your online presence.

"The DavidTutera Experience" is a one of a kind event for wedding and planning professionals that offers expertise from esteemed educators and 1:1 coaching in one fabulous location or another. It was time to refresh the existing site for DTE and we knew how important the design would be for David's audience, so it had to be on point, both visually and functionally.

Event planners are busy and have a keen eye for details. They needed to be able to access information quickly and be able to take action easily, all within a beautiful aesthetic that is pleasing to the eye.

And that's exactly what they got with the David Tutera Experience refresh!

Each year, the world is generating exponentially more data than the year before. This data is changing the way we interact with and market to our customers. It provides insights and direction so we can create more effective campaigns and initiatives.

Single source of truth (SSOT) is a concept used to ensure that everyone is accessing and making decisions based on the same sets of data. In the marketing world, we call it a Marketing Technology Hub.

The other really important benefit of a MarTech Hub is the ability for the data to sync. In many cases, marketing data on its own can be worthless unless tied to a conversion or sale.

Your User Interface (UI) is more important than ever as more and more information is being accessed online. 

UI is the design and framework used to direct your users. It's like a visual map to show them where to go, what they should click on, how to access information, and how to interact with you. 

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when designing for UI:

✅ use standardized iconography, colors, and styles that are recognizable to your users (i.e. underlined text typically indicates a link)
💻 use the same scrolling patterns implemented by social channels and streaming platforms (people know these well!)
❗️use content hierarchy to show what's most important on your page (larger text and bolder colors tell the brain to read it first)

As more and more people (about half) are accessing the internet from mobile devices, your website needs to be optimized for smaller screens.

An important part of that optimization is understanding how your users are interfacing with your site. 

And that's where the "thumb zone" comes in.

Make sure all of your calls to action (CTAs) and navigation links are in the "easy" area of the thumb zone. Having to shift positions or go back and forth between 1 and 2 hands makes the user experience frustrating and promotes bounces (users leaving your site).

Keep them happy and keep them there by designing for the thumb zone!
What demographics are to people, firmographics are to organizations!

Firmographics are what you use to segment corporations into groups. By sorting them, your B2B marketing campaigns can be much more effective. 

Think about how much more targeted you can be with your content when you know you're speaking to well-performing, medium-sized, construction companies in the PNW versus all companies across the US.

When potential customers feel like you are speaking directly to them, they are more likely to pay attention to you.
